The Evansville Cancer Center Presents "The Race Against Prostate Cancer" with NASCAR Drivers Richard and Kyle Petty
August 18, 2005 - In 2005 over 232,090 men will battle prostate cancer and another 30,350 will lose their lives to this disease. On Sunday, August 28 at 2 p.m., the Evansville Cancer Center along with local urologists will present "The Race Against Prostate Cancer," featuring celebrity NASCAR drivers Richard and Kyle Petty. This prostate cancer awareness program will be held at The Center, located in downtown Evansville.
Richard Petty, 'The King of Racing,' holds more records than any other driver in the NASCAR circuit for more than 20 years. Beginning as the Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year in 1959, Richard excelled as all-time NASCAR leader in races won, with an incredible 200 career wins and 550 top five finishes in his racing career. Known for his trademark cowboy hat and shades, he is largely credited for turning NASCAR racing into the most popular form of motor sports in America today.
Kyle Petty is quickly following in the footsteps of his father, Richard, and grandfather, Lee, who was one of the most successful pioneers in NASCAR racing. A fixture on the NASCAR circuit for more than 20 years, Kyle offers unique insight into life as a businessman, philanthropist and one of NASCAR's most respected drivers. In addition to driving the #45 Georgia-Pacific Dodge Charger car to victory, he is CEO of Petty Enterprises, one of the most successful organizations in motor sports history.
In this program, Kyle will explore the ideals that have kept the Petty family at the pinnacle of racing for three generations, striving for excellence, teamwork, commitment to family and helping the community in "What a Ride: Life, Family, Community, and the Race Track."
Kyle will also discuss the journey through Richard's diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer, an illness that will strike one in six men in their lifetime. Richard, a prostate cancer survivor, knows that early detection is the key to fighting against this number one cancer among men, which accounts for 30% of all male cancers and 11 % of all male cancer-related deaths.
In addition to raising awareness for prostate cancer, the event will benefit Cancer Care Options, a not-for-profit organization offering emergency financial assistance to cancer patients that otherwise cannot afford prescriptions but experience pain and suffering. A silent auction featuring celebrity memorabilia from sports, musicians and entertainers will be conducted at the program. 100% of the proceeds will go to Cancer Care Options, Inc. Also on hand will be Richard Petty's 5-time championship 1974 Dodge Charger and the Pfizer Viagra NASCAR driven by Mark Martin.
