Bob Dole coming to Evansville to 'Speak Out' at Prostate Cancer Awareness Program

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

July 14, 2003 - Evansville Cancer Center is excited to announce The Honorable Robert Dole will be in Evansville at The Centre on Saturday, August 23rd for this year's prostate cancer awareness program.

He is a distinguished national leader, respected senior statesman and a brilliant legislator with international acclaim, Bob Dole will offer first hand accounts and antidotes of the challenges we have and will face as a nation. As a prostate cancer survivor, he will be sharing the story of his personal battle with prostate cancer emphasizing the importance of early detection for this disease. This year's program, "Bob Dole Speaks Out", will be entertaining and challenging.

September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Evansville Cancer Center will present to our community "Bob Dole Speaks Out", an educational program that addresses prostate cancer (and more). One man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men excluded only by lung cancer. Early prostate cancer usually causes little or no symptoms thus regular annual screenings is a necessity. Detection enables early diagnosis.

Last year we hosted 'Strike Out Prostate Cancer with Bob Gibson'. Over 600 people attended meeting the goals of raising prostate cancer awareness, teaching men the importance of taking charge of their health, and promoting early detection of cancer.

A welcoming luncheon with Bob Dole is scheduled for Saturday, August 23rd, at 11:30 a.m. in the Walnut Room at The Centre. Guests will have an opportunity to meet and have their picture taken with Bob Dole. Also receive an autographed book of Mr. Dole's 'Great Political Wit: Laughing (Almost) All The Way to The White House'.

American Cancer Society grant recipient, Dr. Brian Giesler, a social psychologist and a research scientist with IU Cancer Center, will be our guest speaker at the luncheon.

His presentation will be 'The Quality of Life Following Treatment for Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer.' Tickets for the luncheon are $225 each (which includes tickets to the 2 p.m. program) by calling TicketMaster at 812-435-5770, ext #211 or The Centre box office.

At 2:00 p.m., Bob Dole will address the public in The Centre's Auditorium. The audience will have an opportunity to ask Mr. Dole any questions at the end of his presentation. Prior to his program, there will be plenty of educational materials, courtesy of our various sponsors.

After the program, there is a silent auction where you will have the opportunity to bid on various autographed sports memorabilia such as Bob Gibson signed baseball, autographed photograph of Bob Gibson, Don Mattingly signed baseball, and more!

Tickets for the program are $10 each with reserved seating. Tickets are available through TicketMaster by calling 812-423-7222 in IN or 270-926-6661 in KY or stop by Evansville Cancer Center on Burkhardt Road.

In addition to raising the awareness of prostate cancer, this event will serve as the fund raiser for a not for profit organization, Cancer Care Options, Inc.

Cancer Care Options, Inc. gives financial assistance to persons with cancer who cannot afford to buy medications their physician has prescribed to relieve the discomforts and pain associated with cancer. This organization assists any eligible person with cancer referred by area physicians.

Please help in getting the awareness of prostate cancer out into our community!
