2009 Prostate Cancer Speaker - Charlie Daniels

Tri-State Radiation Oncology Centers (Evansville Cancer Center and the Deaconess Chancellor Center for Oncology, Vantage Oncology facilities) teamed up with Tri-State area urologists and the American Cancer Society to host its eighth annual prostate cancer awareness program, ‘An Evening with Charlie Daniels for the Men You Love,’ on Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 at the Victory in downtown Evansville. The special event featured country music legend and prostate cancer survivor Charlie Daniels who performed and shared his own personal battle against the disease.

The event provided the community with important education about early detection and why annual screenings are crucial in the fight against prostate cancer. The evening’s festivities also included a silent auction featuring various Charlie Daniels’ memorabilia.

The event took on a special meaning to Daniels who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2001 and has become a national spokesperson for early detection of the disease. Daniels was 63 at the time he was first diagnosed in 2001. During a medical examination, his doctor detected a hard place on his prostate, but a biopsy turned up no sign of cancer. However, Daniels' blood tests showed that his level of prostate specific antigen (PSA), an indicator of prostate cancer, was rising. According to Daniels, he continued to go in for checkups every six months and his doctors found prostate cancer cells after the third or fourth biopsy.

“There’s a wonderful lesson I hope people gain from my experience,” says Daniels. “Prostate cancer is like a rattlesnake in your back pocket. You ignore it, it’s gonna bite you. But dealing with the threat is the best way to save your life.”

Those in attendance and at home had the opportunity to bid on autographed memorabilia in a silent auction. All proceeds, including Charlie Daniels donating a portion of his merchandise sales, went to Cancer Care Options, Inc., a not for profit organization founded by Al Korba, M.D., former medical director of Evansville Cancer Center, which aids cancer patients in the Tri-State area who cannot afford cancer medications.
