Strike Out Prostate Cancer
On Sunday, August 11, 2002, over 600 people came to the Victory in downtown Evansville for the "Strike Out Prostate Cancer" program.
After an educational presentation from Phillip Gilson, MD, Bruce Romick, MD, Paul Siami, MD, Al Korba, MD, FACRO and Aly Razek, MD, FACRO, Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals addressed the audience telling them about highlights of his career, answering questions from the public and talking about his battle with prostate cancer.
Mr. Gibson signed autographs for every person who attended the program while a team of volunteers served baseball's favorite foods; hot dogs, soft drinks, and popcorn, courtesy of Buehler's Buy-Low, Colonial Bakery and Double Cola.
The events included a silent auction to benefit Cancer Care Options, which featured sports memorabilia from Bob Gibson, Andy Benes, Bob Griese, Brian Griese and Don Mattingly. Money was also collected from ticket sales generated when Bob Gibson threw the first pitch for the Sunday home game. The total amount of money raised exceeded $5,000.00!
